49. Appeals against levies and determinations---(1) Any person---
(a) Upon whom a levy is imposed under section 45 or section 46 of this
Act, or who is liable to meet the levy; or
(b) Repealed by s. 18 (e) of the Fire Service Amendment Act 1986---
may at any time within one month after notice of the levy or
determination has been given to him, request the Minister [of Forestry]
to appoint a Rural Fire Mediator to give in the public interest a final
decision regarding the requirements of the levy or determination.
(2) Pending the decision of the Mediator the levy or determination in
question shall be deemed to be suspended.
